While attending Syracuse University I worked part time in the Bird Library media services department. On occasion there would be long stretches with nothing to do; the returned media had all been filed, copy machines had been refilled and jams cleared, excess boxes were all broken down and disposed of and all computer systems had been checked and were operating normally.
The desk of the media services department had a VAX terminal that was intended to serve as a reference for library patrons who needed assistance with looking up materials. Me being me, I quickly figured out that it was possible to divert the terminal for personal use and access my UNIX account, check email, and even play MUDs (very bad I know).
During a few such stretches I composed the following short story about an old heartsick vampire and the faerie creature he meets.
