Had been itching to try this, so recently bought an Eveready lantern battery for $3.45 including tax at our local Family Dollar. It was MUCH harder to open than what was portrayed in the video, and what I found inside were 8 D-cells.
I don't have any current use for D-cells, but the good news is that the lantern battery (for which I have no real use either) was not damaged beyond usability.
Sidenote: If you examine your AA batteries you may be able to tell that they are actually AAAs jacketed to fit the AA size. Not all AAs are like this, though, so try to remember to take a look before making a purchase.
